[14 March 2014, Hong Kong] Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) proudly presents Mozart’s Gran Partita and Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony conducted by Maestro Jaap van Zweden on 28 & 29 March 2014 at Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall.
“I would go to hear van Zweden conduct anything, anywhere.”
Andrew Patner, Chicago Sun Times
The play Amadeus includes a scene in which the composer Salieri is amazed by Mozart’s Gran Partita: “It seemed to me that I was hearing the voice of God”. Scored for 12 wind instruments with double bass, this stands as one of the greatest pieces of music for wind ensemble ever composed, and Jaap van Zweden will put the wind virtuosi of the HK Phil centre stage in this heavenly music.
Alongside Mozart’s timeless masterpiece the concert includes Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony, composed under the shadow of the horrific carnage of a world war and dedicated to all victims of fascism and war. Originally written for string quartet, Jaap van Zweden and the HKPhil present the famous orchestral version made by Rudolf Barshai.
Jaap’s Gran Partita will be held on 28 & 29 March 2014 (Fri & Sat), 8PM in the Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall.Tickets priced: $480, $320, $220, $160 are now available at URBTIX. For enquiries, please call 2721 2332 or visit www.hkphil.org.

The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra is the city’s largest and busiest musical organisation and is a vital part of Hong Kong’s cultural life. This season it celebrates its 40th professional season, but its roots stretch back well over a century. The HK Phil has now evolved into an orchestral powerhouse in the region, and an acclaimed cultural centrepiece of Asia’s World City.
