The Orchestra Academy Hong Kong (TOA) is the first joint programme co-directed by the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) and the School of Music of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA), funded by “TrustTomorrow” of The Swire Group Charitable Trust (Swire Trust) with a promising sponsorship of approximately HK$9 million. The Orchestra Academy Hong Kong, set to conclude in August 2024 after a highly successful three-year tenure, has significantly created positive impacts on the 15 Fellows, offering them unparalleled opportunities to hone their musical abilities and gain professional experience.
Under the mentorship of over 20 top musicians from the HK Phil, the Fellows received tailored guidance and constructive feedback, enabling them to perfect their techniques and gain deeper insights into their instruments. International touring with the HK Phil also played a crucial role in their development, immersing them in various musical cultures and exposing them to diverse audiences, which has prepared them for successful careers in the music industry and to thrive on the global stage.
The achievements of the Fellowship Programme are evident in the paths chosen by the graduated Fellows. Some have joined prestigious orchestras such as the HK Phil, Macao Orchestra, and Hyogo Performing Arts Centre Orchestra, while others have pursued careers as soloists and ensemble players, as well as composing and arranging music for various groups. Additionally, several Fellows have dedicated themselves to music education, teaching at music schools and centre, volunteering and sharing their musical talents with the community, thereby continuing to spread the joy and impact of music.
The HK Phil and the HKAPA would like to thank its sponsor, the Swire Group Charitable Trust, for the immense financial and administrative support that has made this meaningful programme possible. The HK Phil is currently working on a financial plan for a follow-up Fellowship-Programme that will enable us to continue to train graduates from Hong Kong and Mainland China on their way to becoming successful professionals in an orchestra. Please stay tuned!
