HOLIDAYS & POPS SERIES: A Viennese New Year

[30November 2017, Hong Kong] Due to heavy demand for the Christmas for Family concert, a further performance has been scheduled. Act fast to snap up remaining tickets for these popular festive concerts from the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil)!

MUSIC FOR KIDS SERIES: Christmas for Family
This year the talented TV artist Corinna Chamberlain will join us to help make our music party fun and joyful! The Hong Kong Philharmonic Chorus will be there to sing seasonal Christmas songs - Jingle Bell Rock, Let It Snow!, O Holy Night and more – as well as add its voice to popular numbers from the music to the blockbuster Home Alone movie. All the audience will be invited to sing along and share the joy! Conductor Gerard Salonga will lead the HK Phil in festive music including Lieutenant KijéSleigh Ride and Deck the Halls. Bring your family and join in the merry-making to celebrate this Christmas with the HK Phil!

Gerard Salonga, conductor [full biography]
Gerard Salonga is a multi-awarded musical director, conductor, and arranger. He has collaborated with some of the brightest musical artists, including Lea Salonga, Michael Ball, Wang Leehom, Hins Cheung, and Elisa Chan. Gerard was recently appointed Assistant Conductor for the 2016/17 season of the HK Phil. His orchestral arrangements have been performed by various international orchestras.

Corinna Chamberlain, presenter [full biography]
Born in Hong Kong and a graduate of the Hong Kong Academic of Performing Arts, Corinna Chamberlain impresses the local audience with her Caucasian appearance yet fluent spoken Cantonese. Currently a vocalist, actress, choreographer, MC and model, Corinna is actively involved in TV dramas, concerts and theatre performances.

Hong Kong Philharmonic Chorus [full biography]
The Hong Kong Philharmonic Chorus was established in 1980. Over the years, it has collaborated with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra to perform a range of different works by composers including Britten, Mendelssohn, Beethoven and Haydn and performed under renowned conductors Lorin Maazel, Nicholas McGegan, Brett Weymark and Jaap van Zweden.

HOLIDAYS & POPS SERIES: A VIENNESE NEW YEAR
Every year the Viennese join together to dance out the old year and ring in the new. The HK Phil is bringing this wonderful Viennese tradition to Hong Kong and we hope this joyful music can set off a dance in your heart! This year Chiyan Wong, a local-born pianist with an international reputation, will join us andshowcase his technique in Liszt’s Fantasia on Hungarian Folk Melodies. Maestro David Angus will conduct the HK Phil in a programme which includes Brahms’ Hungarian Dance no. 5,Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances, Lehar’s Gold and SilverWaltz; and some famous waltzes and polkas from the Strauss family. Come and join us cheering into a joyous new year!

David Angus, conductor [full biography]
David Angus is Music Director of Boston Lyric Opera, following a very successful period as Music Director of Glimmerglass Opera in the USA. A natural empathy with young people has seen him being Associate Conductor at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama in both concert and opera, and for many years he was Vocal Consultant to the Britten-Pears School in Aldeburgh.

Chiyan Wong, piano [full biography]
Born in Hong Kong, Chiyan Wong is a broad and thoughtful musician who astonishes audiences with sincerity and sheer authority. In 2010 Chiyan made his Asian debut at the Hong Kong Arts Festival and performed in the International Music Festival in Dinard, France at the invitation of Kun-Woo Paik.

The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) is recognised as Asia’s foremost classical orchestra. Presenting more than 150 concerts over a 44-week season, the HK Phil attracts more than 200,000 music lovers annually and also maintains a comprehensive education and community outreach programme.

Under Music Director Jaap van Zweden, the HK Phil is undertaking various ambitious initiatives including the four-year project to perform and record the complete Ring of the Nibelung (Richard Wagner).

The orchestra has toured extensively – to Europe, throughout Mainland China on numerous occasions, and to Seoul, Osaka, Singapore, Melbourne and Sydney in 2017 as part of the HKSAR’s 20th anniversary celebrations.

The HK Phil is a registered charitable organisation supported by the HKSAR, Principal Patron Swire, the Hong Kong Jockey Club, the commercial sector and generous individuals.
