[24 April 2014, Hong Kong] Celebrating 125 years since the birth of Charlie Chaplin and 100 years since the creation of his iconic character The Tramp, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) will present two of Chaplin’s classics with live music conducted by Frank Strobelon the stage of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre on 2 & 3 May at 9pm. Touching, funny and iconic, Charlie Chaplin lights up the screen.

In Kid Auto Races at Venice (1914), The Tramp makes his first appearance in a film on general release. The film shows Chaplin’s invention of the ‘photobomb’, hilariously obstructing cameramen left, right and centre at a race day.

The Tramp then falls in love with a blind girl and develops a turbulent friendship with an alcoholic millionaire in City Lights (1931). Chaplin directed, starred in and composed the music for this film.

Frank Strobel has established himself as an eminent conductor in the world of film music. He combines a thorough grounding in the Classical, Romantic and 20th century concert repertoire with a wealth of experience as a conductor, arranger, editor, producer and recording artist. Vintage film music projects he has worked on include Chaplin’s The Circus, City Lights, The Gold Rush, The Kid and Modern Times.

Swire Denim Series: Charlie Chaplin’s City Lightswill be held on 2 & 3 May 2014 (Fri & Sat), 9PM in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall. Free pre-concert talks given by Mr Raff Wilson in English (Fri, 2 May) and Mr Chiu Tsang Hei in Cantonese (Sat, 3 May), will be held at 8:15pm at 4/F Foyer of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Auditoria Building. Frank Strobel has established himself as an eminent conductor in the world of film music, combining a thorough grounding in the Classical, Romantic and 20th century concert repertoire with a wealth of experience as a conductor, arranger, editor, producer and recording artist.

Strobel is strongly committed to the works of Alfred Schnittke. At the request of the composer himself, Strobel arranged 17 of Schnittke’s film scores into concert suites, released in a series of 4 CDs. He was awarded the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik in both 2005 and 2006.

Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra

The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra is the city’s largest and busiest musical organisation and is a vital part of Hong Kong’s cultural life. This season it celebrates its 40th professional season, but its roots stretch back well over a century. The HK Phil has now evolved into an orchestral powerhouse in the region, and an acclaimed cultural centrepiece of Asia’s World City.

The HK Phil is formed on the belief that a great city deserves a great orchestra. Annually it presents over 150 concerts attracting over 200,000 music lovers. Featuring an enviable roster of international conductors and soloists, the HK Phil performs a broad variety of music, with many concerts presented free; among them the annual Swire Symphony Under The Stars. Through its acclaimed education programme, over 40,000 young people learned about orchestral music in the last year.

The Swire Group Charitable Trust has been the Principal Patron of the HK Phil since 2006. Swire’s enlightened support, the most generous in the orchestra’s history, continues to enable the orchestra to reach towards high artistic goals.

The HK Phil’s members come from every corner of the globe, with a strong core of Hong Kong musicians. In September 2012 Jaap van Zweden became the orchestra’s Music Director. Future years will see an ambitious series of new projects, with major international tours, renewed local partnerships, and large-scale concert events. The HK Phil has commenced a multi-CD recording project for Naxos, featuring works by Chinese composers.
