[27 January 2014, Hong Kong] Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) is proud to present well-loved arias from opera, operetta and music theatre performed by Sumi Jo, one of today’s most sought-after sopranos. The concert will be conducted by Jung-Ho Pak. Together, these two Korean artists will take you on an extraordinary music journey on 7 & 8 February.
“A voice from above”
-- Herbert von Karajan
Sumi Jo is one of the most sought-after sopranos in the world. With over 50 recordings including the Grammy-winning Die Frau ohne Schatten, she was described as ‘A Voice from Above’ by legendary conductor Herbert von Karajan. From Verdi’s Aida to Rachmaninov’s Vocalise, her astounding virtuosity and dazzling stage presence make her a delight both to hear and see. Sumi has appeared in such unique events as the gala concert with Jonas Kaufmann, Renée Fleming and Dmitri Hvorostovsky at the Beijing Olympics 2008.
“He [Pak] eschews a baton and leads the musicians with humour and earnest body contortions coaxing the sound he wants.”
Described by the New York Times as a conductor who "radiates enthusiasm", the Los Angeles Times as "a real grabber", and twice by the San Diego Union-Tribune as one of the most "impactful people to watch", American-born Jung-Ho Pak has established a reputation as a visionary and influential leader. He has been the principal conductor of the Emmy-nominated Disney Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra for 8 years and has performed across Europe, the former Soviet Union, South America and Asia.
Sumi Jo in HK Phil Concerts will be held on 7 & 8 February 2014 (Fri & Sat), 8PM in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall.Tickets priced: $680, $480, $320, $220 are now available at URBTIX. For enquiries, please call 2721 2332 or visit www.hkphil.org.

Sumi Jo, Soprano [full biography]
Born in Korea, Sumi Jo was awarded first prize at the 1986 Carlo Alberto Cappelli International Competition. Praised for the remarkable agility, precision and warmth of her voice, and for her outstanding musicianship, Sumi Jo has established herself as one of her generation’s most sought-after sopranos.
Jung-Ho Pak, Conductor [full biography]
Described by the Los Angeles Times as “a real grabber,” Jung-Ho Pak, Artistic Director and Conductor of the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra, firmly believes the orchestra doesn’t exist simply to play notes, but to “grab souls”. This desire to create a “passionate synergy” with the orchestra has earned him a reputation as a revolutionary thinker in the world of classical music. He served as the principal conductor of the Emmy-nominated Disney Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra for eight years. As a guest conductor, he has travelled to Europe, the former Soviet Union, South America and Asia.

Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra
Music Director: Jaap van Zweden
The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra is the city’s largest and busiest musical organisation and is a vital part of Hong Kong’s cultural life. This season it celebrates its 40th professional season, but its roots stretch back well over a century. The HK Phil has now evolved into an orchestral powerhouse in the region, and an acclaimed cultural centrepiece of Asia’s World City.
The HK Phil is formed on the belief that a great city deserves a great orchestra. Annually it presents over 150 concerts attracting 200,000 music lovers. Featuring an enviable roster of international conductors and soloists, the HK Phil performs a broad variety of music, with many concerts presented free; among them the annual Swire Symphony Under The Stars. Through its acclaimed education programme, over 40,000 young people learned about orchestral music in the last year.
The Swire Group Charitable Trust has been the Principal Patron of the HK Phil since 2006. Swire’s enlightened support, the most generous in the orchestra’s history, continues to enable the orchestra to reach towards high artistic goals.
The HK Phil’s members come from every corner of the globe, with a strong core of Hong Kong musicians. In September 2012 Jaap van Zweden became the orchestra’s Music Director. Future years will see an ambitious series of new projects, with major international tours, renewed local partnerships, and large-scale concert events. The HK Phil has commenced a multi-CD recording project for Naxos, featuring works by Chinese composers.
