[11 October 2012 – Hong Kong]It’s time for the ghouls, the ghosties and the gruesome goblins to come out into the open again. And keeping everything almost under control in his usual hilarious style, we welcome back that great Hong Kong favourite, the one and only Harry Wong in the one big Halloween Party in town.
 

Harry, local sand painting artist, Hoi Chiu, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic (HKPhil), under the direction of conductor Darrell Ang, invite the audiences, big and small, to come join them in a programme that includes ghostly works by Berlioz, Gounod, Saint-Saëns, Grieg and Mussorgsky. While the orchestra brings us the sounds of rattling skeletons, magicians’ spells gone wrong, dancing witches and evil trolls, it’s up to the audience, to show us what they look like. So come dressed to fright – and get to see themselves on the HK Phil Facebook page after the concert – and have a fun-filled, spooky time with HK Phil Harry’s Halloween Party.

Great Eagle Festive Series: “Harry’s Halloween” will be held on 27 October (Sat, 4pm / 7:30pm) & 28 October (Sun, 4pm) in the Shatin Town Hall Auditorium.

Harry Wong, presenter [full biography]
Harry Wong (A.K.A. Harry Goh Goh) is a well-known musician, author, TV presenter, prolific M.C. and entertainer for corporate events and the CEO of a mega children’s club. After completing his music education and commercial music at Mable Thatcher Technical College of Liverpool in England, he started off his career as a musician and teacher. His music text books have given significant contribution to all music students and teachers. His talent in music has granted him opportunities to be a performing guest for the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Hong Kong Dance Company, as well as the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra.

Harry Wong has been interested in magic since the age of six. Apart from being one of the founding members of the Magicians’ Association of Hong Kong, he is also a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, Society of American Magicians and the member of Magic Circle in United Kingdom. Moreover, in 1994, he completed in the International Federation of Magic Societies, which took place in Japan. He uses his amazing magic tricks to bring joys to the public on TV. In 1986, Harry’s first Children TV Programme in Hong Kong with RTHK has left many then-children great laughable memories. Harry succeeded in establishing an image of a Children TV program presenter in 1986 when he first. In 1991, Harry joined the Metro-Broadcast radio channels as a bilingual D.J. He then became the channel director for FM Select in 1996 and continues to be a Children TV Program Host for TVB, ATV, and i-Cable. He is the founder of programme “Healing-Magic” (2001) which he shares his magic with occupational-therapist and apply the art of magic and hypnosis for therapeutic uses. He has also produced many children theatre shows such as "The 5 Elements", “Mad House Party”, “My dad is a Magician 1&2”, “The Trick Brain”, “Kids’ Rock”, etc.

Darrell Ang, conductor [full biography]
Darrell Ang is the Music Director of the Orchestre Symphonique de Bretagne, Music Director of the Singapore National Youth Orchestra, Young Associate Conductor of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, and Conductor Laureate of the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic. In 2007 he won the 50th Besançon International Young Conductor’s Competition, as well as the ‘9th Antonio Pedrotti International Competition for Conductors’ in 2006 and the ‘8th Arturo Toscanini International Competition for Conductors’ in 2008.

Following his débuts with some of the most important European and Asian orchestras, he has made an unbroken string of return appearances with (among others) the Orchestre National de Lyon, the Orchestre Philharmonique du Strasbourg, the Orchestre National de Bordeaux-Aquitaine, the Orchestre des Concerts Lamoureux, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra Filarmonica “Arturo Toscanini”, the Orchestre Regionale dell’Emiglia Romagna, the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, the Taipei Symphony Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan (Taiwan Philharmonic), the Singapore Lyric Opera, the Orchestre de Bretagne, the Orchestre symphonique de Nancy, the Wiener Kammerorchester and the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Philhamonic Orchestra, the RTVE Symphony Orchestra Madrid and the Orchestra della Toscana.

As Music Director of the Singapore National Youth Orchestra he has been responsible for immediately raising the level of the orchestra: in 2011 made an appearance at the renowned Aberdeen International Youth Festival in Aberdeen, UK and will be showcased at the 2012 Young EuroClassic concerts at the Konzerthaus in Berlin. He has been instrumental in discovering and promoting exceptional young talents, working actively with the Musical Olympus Foundation in featuring winners of top international competitions in concerts at Carnegie Hall, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Hall and the Esplanade Concert Hall in Singapore.

Hoi Chiu, sand painting artist [full biography]
Hoi Chiu is the Co-Artistic Director of All Theatre Art Association (ATAA). He was trained at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) for prop-making and was the founder of Hong Kong Puppet Centre on Lamma Island. He has led a colourful artistic life as an illustrator, puppeteer, actor, director, set and costume designer, exploring a wide spectrum of artistic endeavours, from formal ritual theatre to the community-based playback theatre. In 2003, he has taught and performed at International Playback Theatre Conference in Japan. He also directed The 5 Elements, an award-winning musical premiered at the International Arts Carnival, which then toured in various children’s arts festivals in Canada. There he met his wife Maggie Blue O’Hara, and together they founded ATAA, for which he performed multiple roles, including original concepts, stories, costumes, stage and props design, puppet construction as well as directing and performing. Since 2009, he has been invited to do sand paintings, including a music video for pop singer Eason Chan and TV programme Headliner by Radio Television Hong Kong, etc.

HONG KONG PHILHARMONIC

The Hong Kong Philharmonic is a vital part of Hong Kong’s cultural life, as the city’s largest and busiest musical organisation. In 2013/14 the HK Phil will celebrate its 40th professional season, but its roots are well over a century old. The HK Phil has now evolved to become an orchestral powerhouse in the region, and an acclaimed cultural centrepiece of Asia’s World City.

The HK Phil is formed on the belief that a great city deserves a great orchestra. Annually it presents over 150 concerts for 200,000 music lovers. Featuring an enviable roster of international and local artists, with many concerts presented free, among them the annual Swire Symphony Under The Stars. Through its acclaimed education programme, over 40,000 young people learned about orchestral music last year.

The HK Phil’s members come from every corner of the globe, joining its strong core of Hong Kong musicians. In September 2012, Jaap van Zweden became the orchestra’s Music Director. Future years will see an ambitious series of new projects, with major international tours, renewed local partnerships, and large-scale concert events. The HK Phil has recently commenced a multi-CD recording project for Naxos, featuring works by Chinese composers.
