[9 March 2015, Hong Kong] After his sold-out performances with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) in 2012, jazz trumpet legend James Morrison returns to our stage on 3 & 4 April in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall with more of his unique brand of cool and toe-tapping tunes.

All types of jazz will be performed, including music from the film scores of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, When Harry Met Sally and Paris Blues. Join James, conductor Marc Taddei, Hong Kong’s hottest jazz guitarist Eugene Pao, and the HK Phil for some of the greatest jazz hits from Armstrong to Zawinul!

Marc Taddei, conductor [full biography]
Marc Taddei frequently conducts every professional orchestra in New Zealand and often works with the National Ballet and Opera companies. He has worked with such diverse artists as Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Anne Sofie von Otter, Julian Lloyd Webber and James Morrison.

James Morrison, trumpet [full biography]
James Morrison has performed in most of the world’s most famous jazz clubs – The Blue Note and Village Vanguard in New York, the New Morning in Paris and, of course, Ronnie Scott’s in London. He made his début at the Monterey Jazz Festival in the US at the age of 16.

Hetty Kate, vocalist [full biography]
Hetty Kate has performed with a number of Australia’s musical luminaries including James Morrison, Joe Chindamo and Simon Tedeschi. Appearances have included the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, the Wangaratta’s Festival of Jazz and jazz festivals in New Zealand and Japan.

Eugene Pao, guitar [full biography]
Eugene Pao is Hong Kong’s most publicly recognised jazz musician. He has performed on stage with Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Martin Taylor, James Moody, and many more.

Anthony Fernandes, drums [full biography]
Anthony Fernandes has recorded more than 500 albums in different styles of music. He has worked with numerous international jazz and blues artists and played with over 150 Hong Kong, China, Singapore and Taiwan pop artists.

Sylvain Gagnon, double bass [full biography]
Sylvain Gagnon has recorded over 40 albums and toured worldwide with his own band as well as with many internationally acclaimed musicians. From 1989 to 1991 and in 1995 again he was the host bassist of the jam sessions of the Montreal International Jazz Festival.

Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra

The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) is regarded as one of the leading orchestras in Asia. With a history stretching back to 1895, when it was formed as the Sino-British Orchestra, the HK Phil was re-named in 1957 and became fully professional in 1974. In February 2015, it embarks on a major tour to Europe, with concerts in London, Vienna (Musikverein), Zurich, Eindhoven, Birmingham, Berlin and Amsterdam.

Thanks to significant subsidy from the Hong Kong Government and long-term funding from Principal Patron Swire, The Hong Kong Jockey Club and other supporters, the HK Phil now boasts a full-time annual schedule of classical music concerts, pops concerts, an extensive education programme, and collaborations for staged opera with Opera Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Arts Festival.

Conductors and soloists who have recently performed with the orchestra include Vladimir Ashkenazy, Ning Feng, Matthias Goerne, Lang Lang, Yu Long, Yundi Li, the late Lorin Maazel, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Yuja Wang and Edo de Waart, the HK Phil’s previous Music Director.

The HK Phil promotes the work of Chinese composers through an active commissioning programme, and has released recordings featuring Tan Dun and Bright Sheng, each conducting their own compositions, on the Naxos label. Its acclaimed community engagement programme brings music to ten of thousands of children annually. A recording will soon be issued free to schoolchildren throughout Hong Kong of Britten’s A Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf and Leopold Mozart's Toy Symphony.

In 2013/14 season, the orchestra made critically-acclaimed tour performances in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xiamen and Taipei. Future plans include tours to the USA, Japan and Korea.

The Swire Group has been the Principal Patron of the HK Phil since 2006. Through this sponsorship, which is the largest in the orchestra’s history, Swire also endeavours to promote artistic excellence, foster access to classical music and stimulate cultural participation in Hong Kong, and to enhance Hong Kong’s reputation as one of the great cities of the world.

This season is Jaap van Zweden’s third as Music Director of the HK Phil. With him, the orchestra is undertaking major expansion and new projects, including the first-ever performances by a Hong Kong or mainland Chinese orchestra of Wagner’s The Ring of the Nibelung. The four operas are being performed, one a year, in concert and recorded live for the Naxos label.
