[6 August 2014, Hong Kong] The famous Yellow River Piano Concerto is probably the best-known Chinese symphonic work. To mark National Day celebrations, it will be performed by an all-Hong Kong line-up of pianist Warren Lee, conductorKen Lam and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) on 26 & 27 Sep. Renowned Chinese soprano Huang Ying will also celebrate the occasion with a selection of Chinese art songs and more.

Two Hong Kong-born artists, conductor Ken Lam, who won the 2011 Memphis International Conducting Competition, and pianist Warren Lee, who first played with the HK Phil at the age of 6, will collaborate for the Yellow River Piano Concerto. A richly melodic composition which evokes the scenic beauty of China and a loving expression of patriotic pride, the Yellow River Piano Concerto was first performed before Premier Zhou Enlai in 1970. The concerto has become emblematic of Chinese culture.  

Huang Ying has established herself as one of the most sought-after sopranos with an international career both in opera and concert. She first came to international attention when she made a sensational début as Cio-Cio San in Frédéric Mitterrand’s 1995 feature film Madame Butterfly. She will grace the Hong Kong stage with Chinese folk melodies and art songs as well as signature Western opera arias.

Ken Lam, conductor [full biography]
Hong Kong local born conductor Ken Lam was winner of the 2011 Memphis International Conducting Competition. He is currently the Music Director Designate of Charleston Symphony and Artistic Director of Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestra. He is also Associate Professor and Director of Orchestra at Montclair State University.

Huang Ying, soprano [full biography]
Huang Ying is one of China’s pre-eminent cultural ambassadors and singers. She first came to international attention at age 27, when she made a sensational debut as Cio-Cio San in Frédéric Mitterrand’s acclaimed feature film Madame Butterfly. She has appeared on the stages of the Metropolitan Opera, Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, Opera Boston and Opera Hong Kong. She also recorded operatic arias with James Conlon.

Warren Lee, piano [full biography]
Hong Kong born and bred pianist Warren Lee first played with the HK Phil at his age of 6. He later became the Winner of 1995 Stravinsky Awards International Piano Competition and Grand Prix Ivo Pogorelich. As a Steinway Artist, Warren appears regularly with leading orchestras in Asia. His first solo album From Bach to Gershwin was hailed as a “successful album that Hong Kong can be proud of”.

Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra

The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra is the city’s largest and busiest musical organisation and is a vital part of Hong Kong’s cultural life. This season it celebrates its 41st professional season, but its roots stretch back well over a century. The HK Phil has now evolved into an orchestral powerhouse in the region, and an acclaimed cultural centrepiece of Asia’s World City.

The HK Phil is formed on the belief that a great city deserves a great orchestra. Annually it presents over 150 concerts attracting over 200,000 music lovers. Featuring an enviable roster of international conductors and soloists, the HK Phil performs a broad variety of music, with many concerts presented free; among them the annual Swire Symphony Under The Stars. Through its acclaimed education programme, over 40,000 young people learned about orchestral music in the last year.

The Swire Group Charitable Trust has been the Principal Patron of the HK Phil since 2006. Swire’s enlightened support, the most generous in the orchestra’s history, continues to enable the orchestra to reach towards high artistic goals.

The HK Phil’s members come from every corner of the globe, with a strong core of Hong Kong musicians. In September 2012 Jaap van Zweden became the orchestra’s Music Director. Future years will see an ambitious series of new projects, with major international tours, renewed local partnerships, and large-scale concert events. The HK Phil has commenced a multi-CD recording project for Naxos, featuring works by Chinese composers.
