HK Phil Composers Workshop
Application Deadline: 15 DEC 2017

The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra will present Wagner’s Ring Cycle Part 4 – Götterdämmerung in January 2018. It will be the major highlight of the HK Phil’s 2017/18 season.

With a view to nurturing local talent, a composition workshop for emerging composers has been organised alongside the performances and events of Götterdämmerung. Four to six selected composers will have the opportunity to have their new orchestral works presented at a public workshop with the HK Phil in March 2018. These new works, each of a three to four minutes duration, shall take the music of Wagner’s Ring Cycle as their starting point.

Participation begins with a briefing session followed by the ancillary events of Götterdämmerung and attendance at a performance in January. The new works will be rehearsed and discussed by the HK Phil in the public workshop at the Grand Hall, Lee Shau Kee Lecture Centre, The University of Hong Kong in March. Selected outstanding compositions may be performed in future HK Phil programmes. Each selected composer will receive a bursary of HK$5,000.

Selection will be made on the basis of the potential demonstrated and the level of ability in composing a notated piece of contemporary classical music.

Orchestration:3 3 3 3 - 4 3 3 1 - timp+2 - harp - strings

Attendance at the ancillary events listed below is mandatory for selected composers:
