Hear musical postcards from China, including the famous Yellow River Concerto first presented before Premier Zhou Enlai on Chinese New Year's Day 1970. Now, 40 years on, it is probably the best-known piece of Chinese symphonic music and we hear it performed by Chen Jie, whose playing has prompted one critic to suggest that she demonstrates why young Asian pianists are today “ruling the world stages”. A foreigner's view of America comes with one of the most popular symphonies ever written, its heartfelt themes inspired by Negro spirituals and revisited for us by charismatic Chinese conductor, Lü Jia.
