Mozart vs Salieri

Emperor Joseph II faced a dilemma: he had to decide what style of opera Viennese audiences should be hearing.
There were two options: the Italian style, with florid arias and recitatives, or the German style, with spoken dialogue and simpler vocal writing. So he arranged a
contest and commissioned two composers to extol each style – they just happened to be Salieri and Mozart. Each
created a sparkling work, to be performed at a special competition dinner. Who won? And who should have
won? We’ll let you decide at this unique recreation of the original programme.
