Leningrad Symphony
MASTERWORKS B
Programme
Composed as bombs and artillery rained down, and the city’s tragic siege tightened, the Leningrad Symphony was a rallying call to the world at the darkest hour of
1942. The Symphony and Shostakovich became powerful symbols of defiance: that life would go on, and that
music is more powerful than war. Melvyn Tan, whose scholarly and expert performances of Mozart have made
him acclaimed around the world, returns to our stage with the poignant Twenty-second.
