Lawrence Renes

In recent years, Lawrence Renes has conducted many of Europe’s most prestigious orchestras, including Staatskapelle Dresden, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Deutsches Sinfonie-Orchester Berlin, BBC Symphony and the Gothenburg and Danish National Symphony orchestras. 2011/12 season marked his début with San Francisco Opera (conducting Nixon in China), the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, as well as his returns to several orchestras with whom he has a regular relationship, including the Oslo, Bergen, Hong Kong and Royal Swedish Philharmonic orchestras.

In the United States, he has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Seattle, Houston, Detroit, and St Louis Symphony orchestras, and at the Aspen Music Festival. Further afield he has worked with the New Zealand, Melbourne, and West Australian Symphony orchestras. Other groups with whom he has worked include the Orquesta Nacional de España, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra.

During the period 2001 to 2006, Lawrence Renes held the post of Generalmusikdirektor of Bremer Theater and the Bremer Philharmoniker. From 1998 to 2003 Renes was Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of Het Gelders Orkest, Arnhem. A recent highlight of his collaboration with the Royal Swedish Philharmonic was the Nobel Peace Prize Gala Concert with Renée Fleming.

Lawrence Renes has gained an excellent operatic reputation with a broad range of repertoire, including a number of contemporary operas. He gave the U.S. premiere of Tan Dun's Tea with Sante Fe Opera to great critical acclaim in 2007, and has returned twice since, for Don Giovanni and Die Zauberflöte. He has made débuts in recent seasons at the Royal Swedish Opera, Théâtre Royal de La Monnaie, English National Opera and Seattle Opera.

Having studied violin at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam, Lawrence Renes went on to study conducting at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, where he graduated with honours in 1993. During 1994 to 1996, Renes was assistant to Edo de Waart at the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic.
