Programme

WONG Chun-waiLabyrinth Collapses
RAVELPiano Concerto in GListen
John CORIGLIANOSymphony no. 1 (HK premiere)

First we are proud to present the world premiere of the HK Phil commissioned work Labyrinth Collapses by local composer Wong Chun-wai, the first Chinese composer to win the First Prize in the Coups de Vents International Composition Competition for Wind Orchestra. The work combines contemporary musical language and Late Romanticism to express a deep reflection of human nature and society. Hong Kong pianist Rachel Cheung, the finalist and Audience Award winner at the 15th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, showcases her poetic musicianship and compelling music-making in Ravel’s Piano Concerto. We will also hear eminent American composer John Corigliano’s incredibly moving Symphony no. 1. His original score for the film The Red Violin has won him an Oscar.
