[27 May 2014, Hong Kong] A gifted interpreter and natural presence on the orchestral podium, American conductor Case Scaglione will be making his Hong Kong début with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) and violinist Tianwa Yang with some of America’s greatest musical monuments.  The concert takes place on 6 & 7 June, with Symphonic Dances from West Side Story and the lush Hollywood orchestration of Korngold’s Violin Concerto.

West Side Story stands as a keystone in the history of American theatre. It defined a certain street-wise sense of New York with its iconic dances. In the HK Phil Concert, audiences will hear Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, which he arranged in 1961, highlighting the essence of the complete score.

Raised in Beijing, young violinist Tianwa Yang demonstrated unquestionable ability when she won six competitions as a child. She will play the Violin Concerto by the Oscar-winning composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold. This beautiful work features themes taken from his film scores, and its lush sounds bring back Hollywood memories.

Assistant Conductor of the New York Philharmonic Case Scaglione will also conduct other pieces from some of the best American composers including John Adams’ The Chairman Dances and Ives’ Three Places in New England. This concert will be a taste of American spirit.

Case Scaglione, conductor [full biography]
American conductor Case Scaglione inspires orchestras and audiences with his natural ease of conducting, musical depth and infectious joy on the podium. Currently the Assistant Conductor of New York Philharmonic, Scaglione will be promoted to Associate Conductor in 2014/15 season, a position revived especially for him by Music Director Alan Gilbert.

Tianwa Yang, violin [full biography]
Called “an unquestioned master of the violin” (American Record Guide) who “rises above her competition” (Fanfare), Tianwa Yang has quickly established herself as a leading international performer and recording artist. She recorded Paganini’s 24 Caprices at the age of 13, making her the youngest artist to release the works. Her recordings of Sarasate’s complete works for violin on Naxos also received rave reviews.

Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra

The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra is the city’s largest and busiest musical organisation and is a vital part of Hong Kong’s cultural life. This season it celebrates its 40th professional season, but its roots stretch back well over a century. The HK Phil has now evolved into an orchestral powerhouse in the region, and an acclaimed cultural centrepiece of Asia’s World City.

The HK Phil is formed on the belief that a great city deserves a great orchestra. Annually it presents over 150 concerts attracting over 200,000 music lovers. Featuring an enviable roster of international conductors and soloists, the HK Phil performs a broad variety of music, with many concerts presented free; among them the annual Swire Symphony Under The Stars. Through its acclaimed education programme, over 40,000 young people learned about orchestral music in the last year.

The Swire Group Charitable Trust has been the Principal Patron of the HK Phil since 2006. Swire’s enlightened support, the most generous in the orchestra’s history, continues to enable the orchestra to reach towards high artistic goals.

The HK Phil’s members come from every corner of the globe, with a strong core of Hong Kong musicians. In September 2012 Jaap van Zweden became the orchestra’s Music Director. Future years will see an ambitious series of new projects, with major international tours, renewed local partnerships, and large-scale concert events. The HK Phil has commenced a multi-CD recording project for Naxos, featuring works by Chinese composers.
