“Every instrument invented by our ancestors carries a story, and every story holds a piece of history. When an instrument disappears, its story fades away, leaving history fragmented...” — Tan Dun
Renowned contemporary Chinese composer and conductor Tan Dun set off on his journey 12 years ago along the footsteps of human civilisation. Travelling from Europe, through the Arab world to Central Asia, then to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. He recorded the vanishing sounds, instruments and culture of the ancient cities along the Silk Road and captured them into 16 short films. Tan Dun intertwines film and music, weaves together the documented imagery and sound into a symphonic poem, Sound River, a piece of work carries the history of human civilisation.
Under the baton of Tan Dun, the concert features the newly formed Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Culture and Arts Festival Orchestra, which comprises of members from the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, and Macao Orchestra. With 16 meticulously crafted films synchronised with the music, engaging in a dialogue with the symphony orchestra, the work immerses the audience into a transcendent exploration of the past and future.
