Transfigured Night

In 1899, Arnold Schoenberg wrote his first important work Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night) for string sextet, based on a poem by German poet Richard Dehmel. Dehmel’s poem describes a couple walking through a dark forest on a moonlit night. The woman shares a secret that she bears the child of another man. Listen to HK Phil musicians perform this profound music in which you hear the sadness of the woman's confession, eventually leading to the finale depicting the man's forgiveness of the woman.
