The young Mendelssohn’s travels in Scotland inspired him to write two masterpieces. The Hebrides depicts the wonders of a remote sea cave. Inspired, Mendelssohn scribbled its opening phrase on a postcard to his sister, and composed the rest quickly afterwards. The Scottish Symphony brims with the energy of folk dance, song and highland colour. As a companion work, Jaap introduces mezzo-soprano Christianne Stotijn to sing Elgar’s Sea Pictures – a song cycle pulsating with the many moods of the sea – sun-kissed, brooding, and stormy music, with a brilliant singer to guide us across it.
