Timothy Robinson

Timothy Robinson was a choral scholar at New College, Oxford; after completing his degree in Music in 1985, he continued his studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

He has appeared in concerts throughout the UK, including the BBC Symphony, City of Birmingham Symphony, Royal Philharmonic and Scottish Chamber Orchestras, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and at the Aldeburgh Festival under Steuart Bedford and the BBC Promenade Concerts under William Christie, Sir Andrew Davis and Sir Simon Rattle.  Abroad his concerts have taken him to the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, the Konzerthaus, Vienna, the Orchestre de Lyon and his début with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Simon Rattle

His many recordings include Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music under Sir Roger Norrington for Decca; taken part in Beethoven’s choral works under Myung-Whun Chung and in the complete Beethoven Folk Songs with Malcolm Martineau for Deutsche Grammophon; taken part in Bernstein’s Wonderful Town and Szymanowski’s Harnasie under Sir Simon Rattle for EMI; recorded Alcina with William Christie for Erato and most recently the Mozart’s Requiem with Sir Charles Mackerras.

His recent concerts include appearances with the Finnish Radio Symphony, Bayerische Rundfunk and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestras, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra with both Rattle and Mackerras, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra with Mackerras, the Philharmonia Orchestra and Mackerras, the Hallé with Mark Elder, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra with Daniel Harding and his début with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra with Rattle.

His operatic engagements include Falstaff, Boris Godunov and Handel’s L’Allegro for English National Opera, Jupiter in Semele at the Aix-en-Provence Festival, Don Giovanni and the title role in La clemenza di Tito for Welsh National Opera and the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, and Kudrjash in Káťa Kabanová, Jacquino in Fidelio, Janek in The Makropulos Case and Grimoaldo in Rodelinda for the Glyndebourne Festival. He made his début at the Paris Opera in Turandot, returning for Alcina.  He was a member of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, where he has sung Jupiter under Mackerras, Ferrando in Così fan tutte under Sir Colin Davis, Kudrjash, Vasek in The Bartered Bride and Froh in Das Rheingold under Bernard Haitink and Vasek under Mackerras. Recent opera engagements include Tristan und Isolde for Glyndebourne, Male Chorus in The Rape of Lucretia, Lysander in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and his first Captain Vere in Billy Budd for English National Opera, The Greek Passion for the Royal Opera House, Peter Quint in The Turn of the Screw in Salzburg, Kudrjash in Lyon and Captain Vere for Hamburg Opera.

Recent opera engagements include Captain Vere for Hamburg Opera and Peter Quint for both Leipzig Opera and English National Opera. Future opera engagements include Captain Vere in Bilbao.
