Simon O'Neill
Simon O’Neill is a Fulbright Scholar and became Officer of New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2017 Queen’s Birthday Honours list. He has performed at the Metropolitan Opera (Levine, Luisi), Teatro alla Scala Milan and Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin (Barenboim), Wiener Staatsoper (Thielemann), Deutsche Oper Berlin (Runnicles), Bayerische Staatsoper (Petrenko), Hamburgische Staatsoper (Nagano) and Salzburg Festival (Muti); as Lohengrin and Parsifal with the Bayreuth Festival; and as Parsifal, Siegmund Die Walküre, Lohengrin, Florestan Fidelio, and Soltzing Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
Recent concert highlights include: Florestan in Rome with Pappano; title role of Siegfried in Hong Kong (van Zweden); Glagolitic Mass in Prague (Inkinen) and Berlin (Rattle); Erik Der fliegende Holländer at the Ravinia Festival (Conlon); Gurrelieder, Fidelio and Mahler 8 at the BBC Proms; Gurrelieder (Runnnicles), Die Walküre (Davis), Mahler 8 (Harding) and title role Siegfried (Elder)in concert at the Edinburgh Festival; Das Lied von der Erde with the London Symphony Orchestra (Rattle); Siegmund with the Berlin Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic and Dallas Symphony orchestras.
Recent and forthcoming roles for the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin include Kaiser Die Frau ohne Schatten, Florestan, Boris Katya Kabanova and Siegmund. In 2020, he makes a return to San Francisco Opera as Florestan and debuts the role of Tristan with the Santa Fe Opera (Gaffigan), a role he will later sing at the Queensland Opera Under Inkinen. In 20/21 he performs his staged debut as Siegfried in the new Herheim ring for Deutsche Oper Berlin and makes his Glyndebourne Festival debut as Tristan. His first Lieder recording on Decca was recently released.
