Michael Guttman
Hailed by theNew York Times’ Allan Kozin as “a violinist with an incredible wealth of tone colors, with an exquisitely creamy sound... rich-toned and impassioned... impressively variegated,” and praised by the Jerusalem Post as “the Chagall of violinists,” Michael Guttman has performed on three continents as soloist and recitalist, in halls such as London’s Barbican Centre, New York’s Avery Fisher Hall, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw and Bunko Kaikan in Japan, among others.
His groundbreaking recordings of 20th-century violin concertos with the Royal Philharmonic, the London Philharmonic and the Philharmonia Orchestras have been broadcast by the BBC in 110 countries.
The youngest violinist ever to be admitted to the Brussels Royal Conservatory, he later graduated from the Juilliard School, where he studied with Dorothy Delay, Felix Galimir and the Juilliard Quartet. Following the example of his mentor, the late Isaac Stern, he worked closely with Israeli composers including Noam Sheriff, a collaboration that resulted in an album with the London Philharmonic conducted by the late David Shallon celebrating three generations of music-making.
An invited performer at festivals directed by Salvatore Accardo, Yuri Bashmet, Boris Berezovsky and Natalya Guttman, he has also been active as Music Director and conductor of the Atlantic Chamber Orchestra, the resident orchestra of the Music Festival of the Hamptons.
As assistant director to the late Lukas Foss, the legendary composer and conductor, Mr. Guttman collaborated with Peter Serkin, James Galway, Richard Stolzman, Carol Wincenc and Stanley Drucker, among others.
As conductor, he has appeared with the Elba Festival Orchestra, a unique ensemble uniting the Kremerata Baltica, the Moscow Soloists, the Odessa Chamber Orchestra, as well as the Kiev Philharmonic. He has been invited to conduct and/or play by many orchestras across Europe and will appear with the Dallas Symphony. He will also be featured in the famous Robeco Summer Series at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw in 2009.
More highlights this season include appearances at the Gstad Festival at La Fenice in Venice, Salle Pleyel in Paris, and in Claudio Abbado’s Ferrara Musica. Mr. Guttman is the principal guest conductor of the Brussels Chamber Orchestra, the leader of the acclaimed Arriaga String Quartet and of the Michael Guttman Tango Quartet, as well as Music Director of the Pietrosanta in Concerto, the internationally-renowned music festival in Italy.
