David Woodcock
David Woodcock began his musical education as a chorister at Canterbury Cathedral under Dr Allan Wicks. He returned to Canterbury at the age of 16 and completed two years as Cathedral Organ Scholar, before going up to Cambridge as Organ Scholar of Queens’ College. During his time at Cambridge, he directed Queens’ College Chapel Choir, the St Margaret’s Society Chorus & Orchestra and the Gentlemen of St John’s. He studied the organ with David Sanger and Peter Hurford.
In 1992, he was appointed Organist & Choirmaster at Oakham School, and in 1995 Director of Music there. He has, since September 2005, been Director of Music at Harrow School. Life as a school master leaves little time for other things, but David occasionally finds time to perform as an organist and a singer. He sings with the Tallis Scholars and the Choir of the English Concert. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists (for whom he also serves on the Governing Council and Academic Board) and has given recitals in many of the UK’s most prestigious venues, including St Giles’ Cathedral, Edinburgh, King’s College, Cambridge, Coventry Cathedral, York Minster, Westminster Abbey, Canterbury Cathedral and, whilst still a teenager, at the Royal Albert Hall.
