Stage and Production Intern

Job Description: 


The Stage and Production Intern assists with HK Phil’s daily concert running, outreach programs, and tours. This internship provides hands-on experience for the intern to understand  concert production in a professional orchestra. The intern will be a member of the orchestral operation team working closely with the Stage and Production Manager to ensure smooth running of rehearsals and performances. From assisting with stage setup, concert running, instrument handling and tour preparation to facilitating backstage coordination and providing administrative support, the role offers invaluable insights and unique experience into the behind-the-scenes aspects of a professional orchestra.

 

Project Details:
1)    Goals

  • Providing recent or fresh graduates with hands-on stage management training on classical music concert production;
  • Enhancing the understanding of orchestra layout and production aspects, including stage setup, instrument handling, concert running, and logistic arrangements;
  • Providing intern with stage and production experience in taking part in various kinds of concerts (classical, outdoor concert, pop concerts, etc), productions, and tours to broaden the horizons and to gain unique experience working in a professional orchestra operation.

 

2)    Projected Outcomes

  • A thorough understanding of the back-of-house operations in support of the orchestra and concerts;
  • Skills and knowledge developed in stage and production management, including concert operation, touring logistic and budgeting, etc. which are the core duties of the stage team in orchestra operations;
  • Increased confidence in the abilities and readiness for future career development in the arts and culture industry, especially in music.  

 

3)    Evaluation Methods

  • Self-evaluation: the intern will be asked to complete a report every 6 months to reflect on his/her learning journey; 
  • Supervisor/Mentor evaluation: the supervisor/mentor will review the self-reflection report with the intern and provide feedback on his/her work and progress;
  • Internship completion report: the intern will summarize the 18-month training related to his/her learning, performance, areas of improvement, future development, etc.

 

4) Job Description & Public Performance/Productions

  • The  job of the Stage and Production Intern will cover the following aspects:
  • The intern will gain hands-on experience in stage management and production by assisting in concert load-in, set-up, and strike-out periods for approximately 100 concerts during 44 performance weeks in Season 24/25;
  • The intern will learn  the behind-the-scenes aspects of live performances, including traditional concerts, movie-in concert series, and HK Phil's annual mega-event, Symphony Under Stars in Central Harbourfront; 
  • Collaborating with the concerts and projects lead, other departments, vendors, and service providers, the intern will contribute to the successful delivery of various events and activities;
  • Apart from normal concert running, the intern will also be  assisted in various outreach programs and tours: 
    • For outreach programs -  HK Phil arranges a number of Community Concerts  every season, the orchestral operation team will provide concert running support to these concerts .
    • Tours- HK Phil will have a few concert tours in mainland China and GBA  where the intern will assist with freight arrangement, instruments logistic arrangement, and on-site operation.
  • The intern will work under the supervision of the following mentors:
    • Ms. Vanessa Chan, Director of Orchestral Operations
    • Ms. Camille Tam, Stage and Production Manager
